In 1789, was unanimously elected the first president of the United States. Washington wanted to retire after his first term but was re-elected to a second term in 1792. Washington stepped down after his second term in 1797 He died at his home, Mount Vernon, on December 14th, 1799. George Washington led the American Army during the War of Independence and became the first President of the United States and is considered one of the most important figures in American History.
